Does the CRM installing user need to be a member of sysadmin on SQL Server?

Some companies keep tight control on which accounts can be a member of the sysadmin fixed server role in SQL Server. When installing CRM, although the installing user does not need to be a domain admin, the user does need to have certain administrativwe rights and this includes being a member of the sysadmin role on the SQL Server as per this article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699825.aspx under the section Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server setup.

Firewall settings on CRM Server

This document https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/dn683916(v=crm.6).aspx describes the connectivity requirements for CRM in various configurations.

Three ports which must be enabled on the CRM server are:

  • 80 for incoming web access using http
  • 443 for incoming web access using https
  • 808 for the CRM SDK Listener

A symptom of no access on port 808 is that FetchXML based reports do not work.

The table shows the download links for CRM components for versions 2011 onwards.

Click the link to open a new page where you can download the relevant item. The number in the table refer to the download id on the Microsoft website.

The links are for the original RTM releases except for the 2011 downloads which have Update Rollup 6 included in the setup files.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online under Open Licence

The obvious way to purchase Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online is via the Office 365 platform and purchase a subscription. The subscription is billed directly by Microsoft on a recurring monthly basis.

An alternative is to purchase a 12 month subscription under Open License, in return you receive a code which is redeemed in the Office 365 admin center.

CRM 2015 Update Release Summary

Not all updates for CRM 2015 are available for all components. In particular the Update 1.0 series (which introduced functional changes) is not available for On-Premises server. However, Update 1.x is available for some of the other components.

Note that even though the Microsoft KB article references CRM Online in Update 1.0, you can still apply Update 1.0 (and later) to the CRM for Outlook Client if connected to an On-Premises server.

Performance Center

Here is something that I hadn't seen before, the Performance Center. Courtesy of a post by PowerObjects, type CTRL+SHIFT+q to reveal the Performance Center. The first time you do this, click Enable to start tracking performance and then Close.

Then after you open a record call up the Performance Center again (CTRL+SHIFT+q) tosee how long each part of the form load took.

Click Disable in the Performance Center to turn off performance tracking.

Dynamics CRM for Phones (mobile client)

The phone client for phones was updated for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online 2015 Update 1 and later. The earlier version of the mobile app is renamed to Dynamics CRM for Phones Express.
